I consider myself to be a computer user, just as I drive a car, but I won't work on it myself because I don't know enough about it to get it done right. It's fine for ARF (using it right now), but I have an aversion to messing with the OS. This Mac is new enough to update, but as I mentioned before, I'd rather leave it as-is for the iPods, Excel and general stuff. Last edited by Ed in SoDak on Mar 3:58 am, edited 1 time in total. My life is loosely based on a true story. It must be a 2007 or later iMac to boot 10.8 and later. It shows the early and mid 2006 iMac core Duo models support 10.6. I use for most of my info hunts on old and new Macs. Details on your iMac model and base configuration should be on the back somewhere in fine print or find other info under the Apple menu "About This Mac." Since your iMac appears to be Intel-based, TenFourFox won't work for you. You can buy it on DVD to spare the connect time if your WIFI plan is limited data per month. I had to take it to where there was a free WIFI (but only 3g signal) I could borrow, and it took hours at that speed. It was left behind on the latest Firefox and other apps it could use.

It might be good to upgrade past 10.6.x if you can.

My wife Sandy's laptop is a Macbook Pro with 10.8 installed and there's very few things her setup will do that I can't manage with mine. I'm currently using TenFourFox, so +1 on Alan's suggestion for use on pre-Intel Macs. since that is the newest OS that will still run Classic OS 9 apps. All pre-Intel and the highest OS I can boot with is 10.5.8. I use 3 PPC G4 machines and had a G5 iMac running awhile before it croaked again. That's a newer system than any Power PC Mac can run, which makes me think you have an Intel processor and it must be a relatively newer iMac than others are guessing you have. In your first post you say you're now using 10.6.x. There is another computer stored away that runs Win98, which I don't know why I am keeping, except that it still has an A drive and USB, though I haven't looked at any old floppies in many years.īob, I'm a bit confused about which iMac you own. I would imagine the mammaboard could use some caps but I have to decide if I really need it. I recapped the PSU a couple of years ago when it started going wonky. Hardly at use any more is a 10 year old HP desktop. Still on both OS's and if they go nasty on me I'll switch to one of the independent ones. Dell runs Vista, the Toshiba could have had Win8 at the time but Win7 was a nocharge option and I picked that. The Toshiba has a larger screen but I still prefer the Dell. Tonight I happen to be using a Toshiba Satellite laptop that I bought new while waiting for the hard drive for the Dell.

One of the techs talked me through it all and emailed a bunch of driver upgrades. Their factory service and advice over the phone was great.

It did have a hard drive dying at one point about a couple of years later but I replaced the drive with one with scads of memory (I forget the specs) and speed. I bought a Dell refurb business laptop from Dell in I think '09 and love it.
